Where to start...?

Probably with a bit of history of where this set originated from! Lego originally made a Black Panther bust that was just head, shoulders and hands. It was pretty ugly and no one liked it, so Lego retired it. About the time they did so though, a fan had thought he could do better than Lego and released the instructions for a modified version he had built using (pretty much) only the parts that came in the original set but that incorporated the whole upper torso. Everyone loved it, but you could barely get hold of the original set at this point and the prices went through the roof on the secondary market. This set is basically the amended instructions and all the required parts to build it.

Now... firstly some praise. The finished article looks amazing. The way it was redesigned is a work of genius, with realistic looking musculature around both the body and arms, which is no mean feat with Lego bricks.

But... the designer only had the original parts to work with, so there are compromises in how it all fits together. The integrity of the build isn't what you'd normally expect from a standard kit. It really makes you appreciate the engineering that goes into normal Lego builds, and also how clear the instructions normally are because these ones aren't the easiest to follow.

I've built hundreds of Lego sets over many years and this is by far the hardest one I've ever done. Partly that's due to the clarity of the instructions, and partly due to the aforementioned integrity issues. It's not so bad once it's built, but when trying to exert pressure while attaching certain sub-sections it results in whole other sections falling apart. The base in particular is really fragile (a fact I only discovered when I picked it up to move it during the build and it just came away, shattering into hundreds of pieces on the floor and leaving me holding a significant chunk of model with no way to safely put it down, cue lots more bits coming away as I laid it on the table)

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a tricky build, but for me this one crossed the line from tricky to frustrating. When I'm doing a big set I treat it as a project and do a few bags each night. When you finish the last bag there's generally a small pang of regret that it's over, but with this one it was a feeling of relief instead!
Talking of big sets, it's also worth mentioning how big this thing is. It's huge, probably about half of life size, so big in fact it terrified my 8 year old daughter!

So would I recommend it? Not sure. If you want a challenge and are willing to put up with the frustration then the finished article looks incredible. Just be prepared to swear quite a lot along the way...
